The Best Expression of Terroir
At Robert Mondavi Winery, the winegrowing team believes that great wine is a reflection of its origin. The wines made at Robert Mondavi Winery express the terroir of the two vineyard properties that constitute our Napa Valley vineyard holdings. The winegrowing team harvests a majority of the fruit for its wines from these vineyards and each lies in a different sub-appellation, providing the winery a wide variety of soils and climatic conditions for planting different grape varieties.
The winery is situated on the northern edge of our 550-acre To Kalon Vineyard, parts of which were originally planted in the middle of the 19th century, in the Oakville region. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville and specifically from To Kalon Vineyard has been found to be some of the finest in the Napa Valley. The other vineyard is our 400-acre Wappo Hill Vineyard in the Stag’s Leap region, which supplies much of our Merlot and the Sauvignon Blanc for our Napa Valley Fumé Blanc.
With more than 70 years of Napa Valley winegrowing experience, Robert Mondavi and his family have played an instrumental role in developing and promoting the quality of wines produced from the Napa Valley. In the mid-1980s, Tim Mondavi, Robert's youngest son, helped establish the clear and logical definitions of appellations, or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), within the Napa Valley. He presented the valley’s most fundamental geographic features with the region’s history to help vintners create a meaningful appellation structure, allowing each to better define its own terroir.
An important part of managing the vineyard, is maintaining the balance between viticulture and nature. Robert Mondavi Winery has been recognized as a leader in environmental responsibility. Dedicated to growing wine naturally, the winery introduced its natural farming and conservation program more than 20 years ago with goals of worker health, environmental protection and enhanced grape quality.
Natural winegrowing for Robert Mondavi Winery means working in harmony with nature to protect the health of people and the earth while producing the finest quality wine.
